CASE HISTORY + GOAL PLANNING: The initial section of our appointment will be the case history. This is where we discuss your pain presentation and symptoms, also touching on general health and past medical and injury history. We will then discuss your health and wellbeing goals. My goal is to get the big picture of your current state of health and wellbeing, and where you want to be. This part is also important for me to make the decision on whether you are safe to treat. Osteopathy is a very safe treatment, but in a few rare cases it is not the appropriate modality. When I have made the decision that you are safe to treat, I will explain to you my framework for recovery then move on to the examination.
EXAMINATION: During the examination, you will start off standing, if you can. I will assess general posture, then palpate/ assess for symmetry, landmarks, and muscle tension. We will then go through a range of movements depending on your presentation to assess the quantity and quality of movement, as well as what reproduces the pain. The goal of the examination is to understand where the pain is, what is causing the pain, and to start to answer the question 'Why is the pain here, now? What predisposed it? What is maintaining it? At this point, I will explain my working diagnosis and suggest a treatment and management plan. You are welcome to ask any questions the whole way through the appointment
TREATMENT: Treatment involves work on muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and viscera. Techniques I use include joint mobilization, adjustments, soft tissue work, massage, scraping, stretching, exercise prescription and K-taping

Yes, we can refer you for further imaging if clinically justified. Our Osteopaths can refer you further imaging through one of two pathways:
1) Refer to your GP for further imaging
2) Refer privately to our imaging partner Oryon Imaging.
We can provide a referral letter for whichever pathways you and your Osteopath agree on

6. Can I bring someone?
It is very important to us that you feel comfortable in all your sessions, so we go to every effort to do so. So if you feel more comfortable bringing someone, you are most welcome to bring a family member or friend. Due to the varying room sizes we use, we suggest not bringing more than one person

No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath. Osteopaths are primary care practitioners and also Allied Health Professionals (alongside physiotherapists, podiatrists and paramedics), meaning you can be confident of safe and professional conduct at all times. Osteopathy is recommended by The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the treatment for lower back pain. In addition, there are guidelines published by the Department of Health which advocate that osteopathy can effectively treat patients with musculoskeletal problems. We suggest that you let your GP know if you are having osteopathic treatment, so that they can keep your patient notes up-to-date.
