Medical Acupuncture aka Dry Needling

Evidence-based needling for pain, muscle tension, and recovery  integrated into your care at Zenith O +W

WHAT IS MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE?

Medical acupuncture - sometimes called dry needling or Western medical acupuncture - is a modern, evidence-informed approach to pain relief and muscle function.

It uses the same fine, sterile needles as traditional acupuncture, and is grounded in contemporary anatomy, neurophysiology, and clinical reasoning.

Unlike traditional acupuncture, which works with the concept of Qi and meridian pathways, medical acupuncture targets specific muscles, trigger points, and fascial structures to create measurable physiological responses.

Here at Zenith O+W it is always applied as part of an integrated group of tools for your recovery.

How does it work?

When fine needles are inserted into targeted points in muscle or connective tissue, they trigger a cascade of physiological responses that support healing and pain relief:

  • Stimulating the release of endorphins and oxytocin, your body's natural pain-relieving and calming chemicals

  • Increasing localised blood flow to promote tissue healing

  • Releasing trigger points and reducing protective muscle guarding, which restores movement and eases discomfort

  • Modulating pain signals via the nervous system, reducing both acute and chronic pain perception

The result is a treatment that works with your body's own mechanisms, not against them.

What Medical Acupuncture can help with

Medical acupuncture is most commonly used for musculoskeletal conditions --- those involving muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissue. At Zenith, it is used as part of integrated care plans for presentations including:

NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recognises medical acupuncture as beneficial for musculoskeletal pain, and recommends it in the management of tension headaches, migraines, and lower back pain.

What To Expect

Your first appointment will always begin with a thorough assessment. Medical acupuncture is only used when it is clinically appropriate for your specific presentation it will never be applied without a clear reason.

During treatment, very fine single-use sterile needles are placed into targeted points. Most people feel little to no discomfort on insertion; what you may notice is a mild heaviness, warmth, or tingling sensations that indicate the treatment is working. Some people find it deeply relaxing.

Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes, and acupuncture is usually one component within a broader treatment approach rather than the entirety of your appointment.

After your session, you may feel some mild muscle soreness similar to the sensation after exercise which usually resolves within 24 hours. Bruising is rare but possible. Most people notice improvement in movement and reduction in pain within hours to a few days.

Medical Acupuncture at Zenith Osteopathy + Wellness

At Zenith O+W, medical acupuncture is never a protocol

It's a clinical decision. It is selected, timed, and applied based on what your body needs at each stage of your care, and it works alongside our other treatments to address not just where you feel pain, but why.

This means the needling you receive is purposeful, precise, and part of a wider picture. You will always understand what we\'re doing and why --- because informed patients get better outcomes.

If you are needle-phobic or have concerns about the technique, please mention this when you book. There is no pressure to use acupuncture, alternative approaches will always be available.
